Network of Diverse Healthcare Professionals Discussed the Basics of American Healthcare System

PITTSBURGH, PA – On March 28th, the Diverse Healthcare Professionals Network hosted a free interactive workshop targeted towards healthcare providers and immigrant community members on the American Healthcare System. The network is a partnership between All for All and the Pittsburgh chapter of the Whitetulip Health Foundation. This is the third of four workshops.

The workshop started with networking among diverse healthcare professionals and community members for an hour while enjoying refreshments.  The American Healthcare System workshop started with the updates from “Diverse Healthcare Professionals Network” Project that aims to nourish diversity of local healthcare workforce via supporting new coming immigrant/refugee population with career guidance. The program continued with welcoming remarks by Susan Baida, Diversity and Inclusion Director at UPMC. The workshop continued with a presentation by Dr. Murat Sari of Allegheny General Health Hospital, Department of Neurology and volunteer of Whitetulip Health Foundation.

Dr. Sari shared the basic role of different institutions and healthcare providers within The American Healthcare Systems.  After Dr. Sari, Katie Holler from Consumer Health Coalition explained the basics of healthcare insurance specifically discussing options for immigrant and refugees.

Event continued with a breakout session during which complimentary blood pressure, blood glucose, and BMI checks were available to all attendees.  Finally, event was concluded with a interactive game that had questions from presentations and winners received gift card prizes.

The theme of subsequent workshop will focus on career building within the American Healthcare System. The network aims to build a community of immigrants and diverse healthcare professionals to create career pathways for those interested in entering the field.
